What Can You Do With Only One Shoe? Reuse, Recycle, Reinvent – Book Review

You guys may know that we are involved in our local 4H. As members, my children all have to pick a project that they work towards for the year. Losh chose Recycling, and it suits him perfectly. He has nearly all of my family saving plastic and aluminum for him. This book, “What Can You Do With Only One Shoe? Reuse, Recycle, Reinvent” by Simon and Sheryl Shapiro was a great book to go along with Losh’s project.

In this inventive new collection of verse, Sheryl and Simon Shapiro introduce readers to 13 everyday objects that have been ingeniously reimagined into something else altogether.

Color photographs of recycled objects are accompanied by lighthearted, jaunty poems in a variety of lengths and rhyming patterns. Kids will love identifying each reinvented item, and will marvel at how a shoe makes a great bird’s nest, how old tin cans make a guitar, or how a car can be transformed into a bed!

Complete with Francis Blake’s lively color illustrations, What Can You Do With Only One Shoe? will delight young readers while introducing the idea of recycling and repurposing in a new and innovative way. (Source)

Starting off, the illustrations were brilliant, full of color, and quite detailed. The images that went along with the poems were perfect. To make it fun for Losh, I used sticky notes and covered the pictures, but left the illustrations visible. Losh enjoyed reading the poems and trying to guess which item was being recycled.

This book is great for introducing a young child to the concept of recycling, and to help gain ideas about creative ways household items can be recycled. An often mundane task becomes exciting with the poems in this book. If you are a beginning recycler, or looking for new ways to recycle old items, then this book is perfect for you!

I haven’t heard of Annick Press before. I love that this book puts an emphasis on recycling and repurposing items. What a fun game you played with your son. My kids are interested in recycling since we got a huge recycling bin from our city to use!
